Utah Crew Coaches

Nelson Mills -- Head Coach

Coach Nelson joined Utah Crew as Head Coach in the Fall of 2014. During his tenure, Utah Crew has seen a lot of firsts.

During the 2014-2015 season, Utah Crew's boys varsity 4+ was seeded top 10 in the Southwest Region and placed in the top 9 at the Southwest Youth Championships. The best finish ever for a Utah Crew boat up to that point. During 2015-2016 season, Utah Crew had a 2nd place finish at the Head of Lake, won the Salt Lake Indoor Rowing Championship points trophy, and had its first ever appearance in a grand final at Southwest Youth Championships. In addition, Utah Crew qualified its first ever boat for Youth Nationals and tied for the team points trophy at the Mountain West Championships.

In the summer of 2016, Coach Nelson took a group of junior rowers and recent alumni to compete in the Britannia Challenge Cup of the Henley Royal Regatta. The crew won their first two races advancing to the semi-finals (final four) before being defeated. This was a record breaking trip for Utah Crew

Nelson rowed for Kent School and Boston Rowing Club.  Nelson is a graduate of Columbia University. After graduating, he coached for Northwood School and Pittsford Crew.

David Salmons -- Assistant Coach

Coach David Salmons rowed as a lightweight for TC Williams High School and Thompson Boat Center. He's here in Utah studying at BYU.
